Why do people say they’re OKAY when asked even when they are NOT OKAY?

--

In language the standard response to “how are you” is “I’m fine” or “I’m great” “I’m Okay” or “I’m Good”.

As a result, these fixed phrases have become an automatic response and the go-to socially-expected answers even when it’s far from the truth.

How honest are you when people ask ‘How are you?’ or ‘How are you doing?’ Do you always say, ‘FINE’ or ‘I’m OKAY’ or ‘Great’ even when you are not? WHY? What reactions do you get from people when you are honest about your feelings?
